How to Make a Birthday Registry: A Complete Guide for Kids and Adults

By Claim A Gift · Published

To make a birthday registry, create a shared online list, add a selection of gifts at different prices with details such as size, colour and store, and send the guest link to your guests. Reservations help people coordinate before buying. Claim A Gift is free, and creating a list does not require an account.

Why a birthday registry can help

A birthday registry saves repeated conversations about what the birthday person would like. Guests get concrete ideas instead of having to guess, and a shared view of available gifts can reduce duplicate purchases.

This guide covers when a registry makes sense, what to put on it, how to share it without sounding pushy, and how to handle it around the party.

Step 1: Decide if you need a birthday registry

A registry is not necessary for every birthday. For a small dinner with two close friends, a message may be enough. For a school class party, a shared list can make coordination easier.

  • There are several guests: around five or six is a useful planning example, not an app limit.
  • Guests do not know each other, as at a school party or a mixed group of friends and colleagues.
  • People keep asking what to buy: a list answers them in one place.
  • The birthday person has specific needs, such as sizes, a collection or a hobby with particular gear.
  • Several guests would like to help with one bigger gift.

Step 2: Choose where to make it

Reservations show what guests intend to buy, not what has actually been purchased or delivered. Guests should reserve before shopping and cancel if their plans change.

In Claim A Gift, paste a product link, wait for the preview, review or correct the details, then press Add. Some shops do not provide usable previews; you can enter the details manually or add a gift without a link.

Step 3: Decide how many items to add

These are editorial starting points, not product limits. Too few ideas can leave late guests with little choice; too many can feel like a shopping catalogue.

  • Kids' party: roughly the number of guests plus 30%; for 15 guests, about 20 ideas.
  • Adult birthday: five to ten well-chosen, personal ideas may be enough.
  • Milestone birthday: a few ordinary gifts plus one or two bigger group gift ideas.

Step 4: Mix prices so guests can choose comfortably

Guests have different budgets. This example is a way to plan a balanced list, not a required price structure. If every gift costs €80, some guests may prefer to go off-list.

A group gift contribution records a pledge. Claim A Gift does not collect or transfer money; agree separately how to pay and who will make the purchase.

€50–100About 20%Headphones, a watch strap or sports gear.
Group gift (€100+)One or two ideasA bike, a console bundle or a weekend trip.

Step 5: Write useful gift details

  • Use the link to the exact product when the model matters.
  • Specify size, colour or version: “Size 128”, “Blue or green”, “Not the travel edition”.
  • Name a preferred store if returns or availability make it important.
  • Add a short note, such as which books are already owned.
  • Custom ideas work too: swimming lessons, a day out with Grandpa or something for an aquarium.

Step 6: Share it politely

Put the guest link in the invitation or send it when people ask. Keep gifts optional, offer lower-priced choices and avoid making the list sound like an entry requirement.

For example: “Your presence is the best present! If you would like to bring something, here are a few ideas: [link]”

Or: “Several people asked what Leo would like, so we made a short list. Please reserve what you choose to help us avoid doubles: [link]”

For more copyable examples, see how to word a gift list on an invitation. The birthday registry guide explains the practical list flow.

If you create a list as a guest, save the Creator link somewhere private so you can return to edit it. Share the guest link, not the Creator link.

Step 7: Fit the list into a kids' party timeline

Where reservation or contribution names were recorded, the Creator can see them only after the entire event day has ended, in the event’s time zone. They are not shown in the public guest view and are not proof of payment or receipt. Older records without names cannot be reconstructed.

  • Three to four weeks before: choose the date, venue and guest list, then prepare the registry.
  • Two to three weeks before: send invitations with the guest link.
  • One week before: check availability and add a few choices at different prices if needed.
  • On the day: open gifts during or after the party, according to your family's preference.
  • After the party: send thank-you messages based on the gifts you actually received.

Step 8: Avoid common duplicate traps

A list helps only when guests use it; it cannot guarantee that no duplicate gifts will be bought.

FAQ

How do I make a birthday registry?

Create a shared list, add useful gift ideas at different prices, include details such as size and colour, and share the guest link. Ask guests to reserve before buying.

Is it rude to have a birthday registry as an adult?

Keep it optional and share it when people ask. A short list with lower-priced choices is a helpful suggestion, not a demand.

How many items should be on a kids' birthday registry?

The number of guests plus roughly 30% is one planning guideline: about 20 ideas for 15 guests. It is not an app requirement or limit.

Can I add gifts from different stores?

Yes. Paste a product link, review the preview and press Add. If a shop does not provide a usable preview, enter the details manually. Gifts without links are also supported.

Do guests need an account?

No. Guests open the guest link, choose an available gift, enter their name and confirm the reservation.

What if all the gifts get reserved?

Check before the party and add a few more suitable ideas at different prices. A reservation records a plan to buy, not a completed purchase.

Practical next step

If you want to turn these ideas into a list guests can actually use, open the related guide or create a shared gift list.
